Belize’s barrier reef, the second-largest in the world, is a vibrant UNESCO World Heritage site teeming with nearly 1,400 species, including green, hawksbill, and loggerhead turtles, along with angelfish, blennies, seahorses, and parrotfish. These creatures weave through a 190-mile expanse of rich corals, while shark enthusiasts can encounter lemon, nurse, and Caribbean reef sharks. However, the reef's true magic unfolds after dark. Under the moonlight, octopuses unfurl and eels with glinting eyes emerge, while nightly encounters with Caribbean reef squid offer surprises, including one that inked me after swimming straight into my face in a feisty fit.
